STTk-12: "the magic" by mr. grimm.

after warming up with 2019's "anxiety" digital 12", mr. grimm is back again to give us their first true album since 2013, "the magic".

in what seems like direct opposition to our previous assessment of them moving past heavy video game influences, "the magic" is a frantic homage to late 90's/early 2000's gaming, chock full of classic PC soundbites and PS1 samples, all thrown through the ringer with cybermetal and footwork influences to create one hell of a chaotic listen. double kicks and nasally overdrive push forward unendingly propulsive tracks, the end result being 20-some minutes of raw, unpolished, and altogether brutal jungle that sounds like the soundtrack to a late night resident evil session in hell.

moments of reprieve are few and far between, as even when melody does creep in, it mutates and deforms into noisy adrenaline rushes backed by walls of dirty breakbeats. whatever the impetus was for such abrasive and dissonant tracks, it's clear that mr. grimm seems to be steering further and further from their electronica foundations and diving head first into combative productions. from beginning to end, this is easily the most intense release of mr. grimm's discography and maybe even throughout our entire catalog... so far, at least.
