STTk-13: "THE MINDFLAYER SESSIONS" by HYPER SPRAY.

we start off 2021 with the debut of a brand new project... and it's exactly the sonic catharsis we need to start off the next 365 days.

HYPER SPRAY is a freshly created collaboration between two static switch alumni: zachary caputo (aka mr. grimm, aka ZJC, etc.) and james sunderland. the project started simply: zack asked james to remix of one of the tracks off of their latest mr. grimm release, james refused but offered instead to try to work together on something original. attempting to figure out what common ground they could start on, they found a mutual love and respect for legendary duo Mindflayer, somewhat of a sister band to the even more legendary duo Lightning Bolt, and began to mine their discography for inspiration.

they started passing musical artifacts back and forth, anything from simple 4 bar loops and samples sourced from youtube all the way to fully fledged songs, and attempted to create a process that resembled a jam session, albeit a heavily delayed one. this loose workflow lead to an incredibly raw collection of tracks which, when combined with the fantastic artwork from another member of the static switch family, dave cartwright, make up this debut digital 12": THE MINDFLAYER SESSIONS.

sonically, this release pulls from numerous different styles to create a pallet as danceable as it is pummeling. layers of samples from the namesake band's catalog combine with ridiculous bits of pop culture (check out the buried michael jordan sample in the final track) and abrasive synth work, all screaming over high-speed rhythms recalling footwork, gabber, and jungle all at once. the sheer velocity of these four tracks are enough to set your shoes on fire.

apparently, the sessions between zack and james have been fruitful and we expect this to only be the beginning of a beautiful collaboration. be on the lookout for more digital 12"s from HYPER SPRAY in the future.
